Independent Contractors
California Employment Law Attorneys
At the R. Rex Parris Law Firm, we assist clients throughout California with legal matters and claims involving
employment law. In addition to helping employees, we also assist independent contractors in these matters, helping to assert their rights and seek the compensation they deserve when any issues or disputes arise. Although independent contractors may have limited rights in regard to certain issues such as working overtime, there are still specific issues that may need to be addressed when a company tries to take advantage of a contractor as a result.
What is an Independent Contractor?
Generally, an independent contractor is an individual who performs specific services for a company but is not an employee of the company. The general rule of thumb regarding independent contractors is that the individual or company paying for the contractor’s services will not have the authority to dictate how the services are performed but rather the final result of the services. For example, Bob is a plumber. He submits an estimate to a contracting company to perform plumbing services for a new project in development at $30/hour for what he estimates to take 100 hours. If the contracting company accepts the estimate, Bob would perform these services and would be paid $3,000 as agreed, even if the job took slightly longer than he originally estimated. In this situation, Bob would be considered an independent contractor.
If you are an independent contractor and have questions about any matter related to your payment or the terms of your agreement with the company that hired you, please contact an experienced
employment lawyer at the R. Rex Parris Law Firm. Although you may not be considered an employee, you still have legal rights in regard to your work and your payment. Our firm can work to protect these rights.
